Qualities of Good Writing

Writing is a significant part of our everyday life. We write to post on Social Media, exchange messages with friends, or write greeting notes or posts for friends and family members. Some of us keep journals to jot down our private feelings and others write blog posts. The various writing we do everyday gives us an opportunity to capture and share our thoughts and feelings.

Developing your writing can help you express yourself more effectively and help you achieve success in life. Being a powerful writer helps you do well in school. It will also serve you well in a wide range of occupations- from content and digital marketing to law, medicine and teaching.

What are the Qualities of Good Writing?

Ideas

Coming up with good ideas is sometimes the hardest part of writing. You may not always recognize them, but there are ideas all around you. Things that interests you- sports, arts, music, pottery, fashion- are a source of an unlimited number of writing ideas. Starting with an idea that interests you make it more likely that you will produce a magnificent piece of writing.

Aside from the things that you like, it is also important to consider whether potential readers will find the idea interesting. Even the best piece of work won’t be successful if no one is interested.

Organization

Once you have the ideas for your writing project, you must decide how to arrange them. Good writing has a clear and consistent organization that suits the topic. For instance, if you are telling a story, you would want to arrange your details chronologically. Using graphic organizers like mind maps can help you put your thoughts in order.

Voice

Voice refers to all the distinctive qualities of your writing- from the type of language you use and the way you put together sentences and paragraphs to the ideas you like to write about and the attitude you convey to your readers.

Word Choice

Word choice is the key element to good writing. By choosing words that convey your meaning precisely and capture your attitude towards your subject, you will help your readers understand your point better and increase the chances that they will accept your ideas and point of view.

Sentence Fluency

Sentences seem to flow seamlessly in a good piece of writing. Transitions make it clear on how one sentence connects to the next. A variety of lengths, structures and openers help create a rhythm that engages the readers.

Conventions

It is very important for a piece of writing to follow the conventions of grammar, usage and mechanics of the language you are using. Errors in these areas will distract the readers.
